RESIDENT ADVISOR FAQ

We know you may have questions, we are happy to answer all your questions.

Please utilize our FAQs below to help you find out more about this great leadership opportunity.

If you have questions, please feel free to talk to your hall staff or contact the RA Recruitment and Selection team at [email protected].

What is the GPR requirement?

RAs will be required to have and maintain a minimum 2.25 cumulative grade point ratio and a 2.0 semester grade point ratio throughout their term of employment. To begin employment, new employees must meet the same GPR requirements and be in good standing with the university.

How much are RAs compensated?

The RA position cannot be easily translated into hours worked per day or week because of the unique nature of the work and the position being a live-on-campus position.  In addition to a 15 percent discount on rent (also RAs are charged a double rate for a single room!), the RA will receive a monthly salary dependent on the current rate scale of the University and the Department of Residence Life (located within the RA application).  The salary will be pro-rated from the date of start in the fall, hall closure during winter break, and last day of employment in the spring or per term, as applicable. In addition, RAs are eligible for a free meal plan with campus dining (local, state and federal taxes will be subtracted from RA pay).

How many classes may I take?

RAs must be full-time students as defined by Texas A&M University.

It is recommended that new RAs not take more than 16 hours of class work. If there are extenuating circumstances, then RAs may request to take additional hours by submitting appropriate documentation and receiving approval from their supervisor.

What does being on-duty mean?

Being on duty consists of the RA carrying a duty phone and responding to/addressing any issues that may arise including, but not limited to: policy violations, student concerns, and/or facility & maintenance issues.  RAs on Duty will walk their assigned buildings twice a night on what we call “rounds”.  Building rounds are a crucial part of keeping the halls running smoothly, and is one of the best times for RAs to interact with residents not only on their floor, but in the building/complex.  How often RAs are on duty will depend on how many people are on the building’s staff, typically once every 4 to 8 days.  RA Duty begins at 5:00pm on weekdays and is 24 hours on weekends.  When they are on duty, RAs are required to be in the building from 7:00pm until 8:00am the next morning.

Can I be an RA and have a roommate?
Only RAs in the modular style halls may have a roommate upon approved request. Modular Halls are: Appelt, Clements, Eppright, Haas, Hobby, Lechner, McFadden, Neeley, Rudder, Underwood, and Wells.
May I have a second job on or off campus?

A Resident Advisor in good standing with the department may request a second job with the approval of their supervisor. New (first semester of employment) RAs that are approved for a second job may work up to 8 additional hours per week. This process applies to positions inside and out of Texas A&M University.

May I participate in Fish Camp sessions as an RA?

If you wish to participate as a counselor with Fish Camp and serve as an RA in the Residence Halls  or White Creek Apartments you may typically attend the first three sessions. Check with the RA hiring Coordinators of Residence Life for updated information at [email protected]

When is RA Training?

RA training will start on or about August 7, 2025, for RAs in the Residence Halls and White Creek Apartments. RAs may typically move in starting the Friday evening before training commences.
