Committees

The By-Laws of the constitution of the Southwest Association of College and University Housing Officers provide that the President of the Association shall, with the concurrence of the Executive Committee, appoint those ad hoc and standing committees which are necessary for the proper functioning of the Association. As a result, the following committees have been established and are in need of your active involvement and support.

CHO Liaison and Steering Committee

The CHO Liaison serves as a link between the SWACUHO leadership and Chief Housing Officers in the region. This person chairs the CHO Steering Committee composed of Chief Housing Officers. This committee investigates ways to actively involve CHO's in SWACUHO, coordinates the annual CHO workshop, solicits programs for the annual conference, and coordinates the CHO breakfast and roundtable at the conference.

The CHO Liaison is responsible for overseeing CHO activities and programs, soliciting feedback from CHO's in the region regarding involvement in SWACUHO, and keeping the Executive Committee informed about CHO programs and issues. This person is appointed by the SWACUHO President-Elect and serves a two year term.

Conference Program Committee

The responsibility of the Conference Program Committee is to organize a program for the annual conference of the highest quality and broadest appeal through:

  • Attracting a large number of delegates to the annual meeting by providing a challenging and diverse program.
  • Soliciting program topics for all staff levels and interests.
  • Identifying and offering programs that will be of the most value educationally, developmentally, and creatively.
  • Selecting keynote speakers who will enhance individual professional development and the prestige of the organization.
  • Providing a stimulating and relevant pre-conference workshop prior to the main conference.
  • Coordinating the moderator program in an effort to assist program presenters and involve young professionals in the conference program.
  • Evaluating all aspects of the Conference Programs to ensure improvements for subsequent conferences.

Diversity & Social Justice Committee

The Diversity Committee is committed to foster and enhance the awareness of diversity within the SWACUHO organization. This includes active involvement of all persons within its membership. The committee will conduct roundtable discussions at annual meetings, provide input on programming, develop strategies to encourage a more diverse representation (professional and paraprofessional) within our region, provide award recognition for member achievements in supporting diversity, and be a resource for workshops and articles.

Exhibits and Displays Committee

The Exhibits and Displays Committee serves the educational and developmental purposes of the annual SWACUHO conference by providing exposure to institutional and commercial exhibits and the solicitation of facility-type programs that contribute to the diverse needs of the individual members and the conference as a whole.

Host Committee

The Host Committee has the responsibility for providing all of the arrangements required to successfully provide for the well-being and welfare of delegates attending the annual conference and mid-year planning sessions of the association. A host institution is generally chosen two years in advance by the Executive Committee at the annual meeting following the review of bid presentations by all interested parties. Host Committee responsibilities generally include: providing a relevant conference theme; designing a conference logo; providing housing accommodations; securing appropriate meeting room reservations; registration and related promotional efforts; provision for banquet meals, coffee breaks and the annual business luncheon; transportation arrangement recommendations and coordination; clerical and hospitality services.

Human Resource Development Committee

The Human Resource Development Committee is designed to further the concept of employee development and facilitate personnel training. This goal is accomplished for member institutions through the implementation of the SWACUHO New Professionals Institute (Supervisory Skills Workshop) (fall semester) and the case study competition at the annual conference. Committee members participate in planning and evaluating the NPI Workshop and serve as Team Leaders to facilitate small group interaction.

Mid-Level Administrators Steering Committee

The Mid-Level Administrators Steering Committee serves as the link between the SWACUHO Executive Committee and the mid-level professionals in the region. The primary tasks are to initiate a listserv for facilitating ongoing discussions about issues affecting mid-level positions, coordinating arrangements for a mid-year conference dedicated to mid-level issues and hosting the mid-level roundtable discussion breakfast during the annual conference.

Newsletter and Communications Committee

The Newsletter and Communications Committee is responsible for gathering information from other committees, institutional members and individuals within SWACUHO. This information is published in a newsletter and distributed to member institutions four times a year. Also, this committee communicates regularly with other regional Housing Associations and with ACUHO-I. The Newsletter and Communications Committee also publishes the SWACUHO directory distributed at the annual conference.

Nominating Committee

The Nominating Committee consists of four members, the three State Directors representing their respective states, and the Past President serving as the chairperson. It is this committee's responsibility to solicit candidates from the region to run for the elected positions of President-elect, Secretary, and Treasurer depending upon the year the terms of responsibility expire. The committee also coordinates the written profile sheets of information concerning the candidates' experience and qualifications, and distributes this information to the general assembly before the annual business meeting.

Placement Services Committee

The Placement Services Committee is responsible for providing an organized system of recruitment in conjunction with the annual conference. The system is designed to provide information regarding employment opportunities to both employers and candidates and assist them with placement opportunities. This committee also works cooperatively with the SWACUHO Newsletter Editor to publish position announcements that occur within housing and food services at member institutions. Recognition and Awards Committee

The Recognition and Awards Committee provides a means for recognition of excellence, service and contributions to SWACUHO, to the housing profession, and to the institutions represented. Institutions or individual members deserving of special merit are sought out by the committee and recognized in a special way at the annual meeting. Involvement in this committee is an excellent way to recognize and reward those members of our association who do so much for the betterment of SWACUHO and our profession.

Research and Information Committee

The Research and Information Committee is responsible for three general areas as follows:

  • To study specific areas of interest to the Association and to make recommendations to the Executive Committee for implementation.
  • To develop and maintain appropriate methods to gather statistical information and to assemble this information annually for publication.
  • To survey member institutions on a yearly basis concerning areas of interests pertinent to the SWACUHO region.

Time and Place Committee

The Time and Place Committee has the responsibility of soliciting member institutions in determining and recommending date and location of future conferences. In addition, this committee assists member institutions in meeting specifications for bid proposals and is responsible for development and update of conference guidelines in an effort to more clearly define those variables necessary to implement a yearly conference. Committee members also solicit bids to host the RA Conference and choose the host school, plus provide oversight of the conference.
