Leadership Living Learning Community

Leadership Living Learning Community LogoThe Leadership Living Learning Community (L3C) is an award-winning “freshman academic interest group” centered in:

  • exposing students to theoretically based concepts of leadership, including a relational leadership model centered in social justice
  • challenging freshmen to be increasingly global-oriented
  • stretching students in their development of self and others
  • supporting Texas A&M University’s core purpose of developing leaders of character dedicated to serving the greater good.

This program is a developmental partnership between the Department of Residence Life and the Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication . The program was named “Leadership Program of the Year” in 2006 by the Association of Leadership Educators, an international professional organization.

It is open to 1) first year students of all majors at Texas A&M University who have 2) accepted to live in Texas A&M University residence halls through the Department of Residence Life, with the exception of the Corps of Cadets.

L3C students, about 120 in total, live in a community that truly engages them in leadership development. Courses in which the L3C students enroll are “team taught” by a student affairs professional and an assistant professor.

Students selected for the program:

  • complete a one semester credit hour curricular course focused in leadership development (ALED 125) in the fall semester.
  • complete a one semester credit hour curricular course centered in peer mentorship (ALED 225) in the spring semester.
  • attend motivating overnight retreat that introduces them to the program and to one another.
  • are mentored by students knowledgeable in leadership development
  • are engaged in outside of the classroom activities that are supportive of what they learn inside the classroom, including at least one out-of-town L3C experience
  • complete a project centered in social justice and leadership development
  • will live in Aston Hall with others in the program, a co-ed residence hall located within the Commons.

In addition, students in the program are welcome to apply to remain with the program in their sophomore year as L3C Peer Mentors. This allows for an increased understanding of leadership development through practice. Peer mentors complete a three semester credit hour curricular course in personal leadership development (ALED 301) in the fall semester and three semester credit hour curricular course in professional leadership development (ALED 340) in the spring semester.
