Science Scholars LLC

The Science Scholars Learning Community is for students participating in a National Science Foundation (NSF) program between Palo Alto Community College in San Antonio and the College of Science at Texas A&M University. Students complete their first two years of college in San Antonio within a learning community there. Once at Texas A&M, student register for Special Topics in Research and Critical Thinking (STLC 289), taught by the associate dean of Undergraduate Programs in the College of Science and co-principal investigator of the NSF grant. Science Scholars will be clustered into similar courses, based on the science major they are seeking. In addition to obtaining a fundamental grasp of research at a flagship campus, students will be intensively advised and made aware of auxiliary services available to them on campus (Student Learning Center, Multicultural Services , Departmental Academic Advising Units, the Counseling Center, Scholarships and Financial Aid, etc).

The Science Scholars program will continue to facilitate a learning community experience that began in San Antonio at Palo Alto. Relationships and the peer support system already in place will continue to be utilized here at Texas A&M. Mentors in the program will monitor the students and direct them to appropriate campus offices for assistance. Tutoring will be made available to any and all students within the program, as determined by performance and need. The Science Scholars Learning Community will not only focus on academic success, but overall acclimation to the university and to Bryan/College Station.

Science Scholars will receive registration assistance from the associate dean of the Undergraduate Programs in the College of Science, in addition to their respective academic advisor. All students participating in the scholarship program offered by NSF are required to live on campus (designated hall) for their first year.
