Access Card System
Photo of Card Access SystemThe Department of Residence Life offers increased residence hall security through the use of the “Aggie Access Card” system. Residence hall exterior doors are locked 24 hours a day. Each door is equipped with a card reader and by sliding the magnetic stripe on the back of your student ID card through the reader you will gain access to your hall. Only the residents of your hall are coded for access to your hall; therefore, it is important not to admit non-residents without an escort. Some other features of this system and related security policies are:

  1. Doors propped or remaining open longer than 45 seconds will trigger a local alarm at the door which will also notify the University Police that this door is open.
  2. Infrared motion detectors are located on the inside of each door. As you approach to exit the hall, the door will automatically unlock for you. Be careful not to stand within 3 feet of the door while waiting for guests or the door will remain unlocked.
  3. In case the motion detectors should ever fail, push buttons are located next to the doors to be used in opening the doors and exiting the hall.
  4. 24-hour lost ID card cancellation is available by calling the Network Availability Center (N.A.C.) located in the Teague building, at 862-4884. The N.A.C. will cancel your ID card, and a loaner card (for hall access only) may be obtained from a staff member in your hall.

Convenience Phones ("House Phones")
A convenience phone is located near at least one entrance of each residence hall. These phones are provided for guests to contact residents, who can then open exterior doors and properly escort the guest to their room. These phones have a red emergency button which, when pressed, places the caller in immediate contact with the University Police Department.

Emergency Phones ("Blue Light Phones")
At various locations across campus, emergency, or “blue light” phones have been installed. These phones can be identified by their blue illuminating box tops. Similar to residence hall convenience phones, these phones have a red emergency button, which puts the caller in immediate contact with the University Police Department. When activated, this button also provides the Police Department with the caller’s location so that officers may be dispatched immediately to that location. These phones also operate as regular telephones so that individuals may call for a ride or other assistance. For a map and more information about campus blue light phones, see University Police Department website

Escorting Guests
Escorting Guests Image Guests in a residence hall must be escorted at all times by a resident of the building (host). The following guidelines apply to escorting guests:

  1. Residents must escort all guests into and out of the building.
  2. Residents must remain with all guests at all times while in the residence hall.

Guests left unattended or found to be unescorted may be documented and escorted out of the building. In addition to this, when appropriate their hosts may be documented for leaving guests unattended. Residents should never agree to escort a person they do not know personally. This includes opening the door to allow unknown visitors to enter a residence hall.

Illness and Injury
If you are ill or injured and in need of immediate help, contact EMS at 9.911. TAMU EMS will respond 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and is a free service for all enrolled students. The following people may also be of assistance: a Resident Advisor or Hall Director, the Area Office, the Health Center (845.1511) or the University Police Department (845.2345).

For all your non emergency health care needs and questions, Student Health Services is located in the A.P. Beutel Health Center and can be reached by calling 845.1511, or by referring to the Student Health Services website.

Security Patrol ImageSecurity Patrols
In addition to the staff living in the halls, the University Police has employed over 100 certified Police Officers and Security Officers to work on campus. Security Officers are paid by Residence Life to patrol the areas outside the residence halls every day watching for suspicious activities, propped doors and open/broken windows.

Staff on Duty
At least one Resident Advisor (RA) per hall and at least two Graduate or full-time Hall Director are “on duty” every night of the week, with the exception of some holiday periods. Contact the RA on duty between the hours of 5 p.m. and 7 a.m. by calling the number on the duty schedule, the hall office phone or the 24-hour Service Desk (845.2821). Duty schedules are posted next to the hall office and all RA rooms. If any problem arises, please contact the staff member on duty in your hall. During weekday hours, contact any staff member you can find, or call the Area Offices (North Area call 845.4768, South Area call 845.2235), which are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
